Climate

Chase Field sits in downtown Phoenix. Summer heat is extreme: July and August averages run 105 to 107 degrees at Sky Harbor with dew points that rise into the 60s during monsoon season from July into September. The park was built with a retractable roof specifically to make baseball viable in that climate.

How wind plays here

With the roof closed, no wind. With the roof open, the surrounding downtown limits natural wind reaching the field. Monsoon thunderstorm outflows can push short-lived gusts through Phoenix in the evening from July into September.

Roof behavior

The Diamondbacks close the roof for the vast majority of home games from May through September because of heat. Closed conditions run around 72 degrees with no wind. The roof opens more often in April, October, and cooler April and early May evenings.

For DFS and bettors

Closed roof produces predictable neutral conditions. Open roof on a hot dry night can produce extreme carry because of the combination of low humidity and warm temperatures. Roof status is confirmed day of game; assume closed for any day with high above 100.
